Core Aeration and Overseeding for Georgia’s Warm and Cool-Season Grasses
All lawns can benefit from core aeration done at the proper time of the year for your type of grass. Here in Georgia, our grasses fall into two different categories, warm-season and cool-season. Warm-season grasses begin their period of active growth in spring. If you aerate a warm-season lawn in late spring to early summer, the ensuing period of rapid growth will quickly fill in the holes you create. Cool-season turf emerges from summer dormancy in early fall and thrives during the lower temperatures and reduced weed competition. Strong growth helps the lawn quickly recover from the stress of aeration. The window of opportunity on fall aeration starts at the end of September and typically ends two or three weeks before the first frost.
Duncan’s knowledgeable and trained technicians recognize the difference between the two kinds of grass and are prepared to identify when the appropriate time to perform aeration occurs. Our south metro Atlanta lawns mostly contain clay soil. Therefore, we recommend having aeration performed twice a year. With multiple aerations over time, your grass will begin to thicken to a more lush, dense turfgrass.

Why does my lawn need aeration?
Lawns that see heavy use, such as playtime with the kids and pets, lawnmower, and even motorized vehicle traffic, all contribute to wear and tear on the lawn. Eventually, over time, this causes massive thatch buildup, which creates an impenetrable layer that denies your grass of essential fertilizer, water, and oxygen. Unable to process what it needs to thrive, your grass will wither and die.

For optimal growth, overseeding is needed
After aerating your lawn, it is primed and ready for overseeding. Overseeding is the process of introducing new types of grass seed to the existing turf with other grass strains. Overseeding will help fill in any bare areas, thicken your grass, enhance its appearance and color, and fend off pests, weeds, drought, and disease. The process of overseeding after aeration is the final step to revitalizing an otherwise unhealthy lawn.
